Kids on the Corner

  • Kids on the Corner Summer 2019 The Jungle Book

The goal of Kids on the Corner, a performing arts group for students in grades 2 – 6, is to educate and enlighten children in different art forms and cultural experiences. The directors adapt a featured book for the session into a script that the children practice for a live performance and they also help the children make all the props and costumes. All of these things happen while the participants study the culture and history of the featured book for the session.

At the end of each Kids on the Corner session, the children are offered the opportunity to participate in a live performance that helps them in the development of their confidence in public speaking. The results of our efforts give children experiences that help promote positive self-esteem and a sense of self worth. We have seen some of the most shy and introverted children begin to blossom in this environment. As a result, these positive experiences then expand into home and school life. We also encourage an appreciation of reading by giving each child that completes a Kids on the Corner session, a copy of the book that was used as the theme.

Care on the Corner has offered 39 productions of Kids on the Corner, serving 497 children from 18 communities. Our 40th production, Shrek, was put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The director and children are working on producing this story digitally.
